What are the hazards of working in a confined space?

Sometimes, workers have to work in confined spaces. These can be challenging to work in and have hazards that might cause some serious accidents. Even though working in such conditions should be avoided at every cost, sometimes, they don’t have any option other than squeezing in the confined space and carrying out the work.

Since working in such conditions is very risky, every worker must know about confined space awareness. This will not only help them with avoiding accidents but also with identifying the hazardous symptoms and protect themselves from the risks. What are confined spaces?

Confined spaces are those which have an enclosure with no proper ventilation system within the environment. It’s mainly a closed-off space with no appropriate exit in the system. Moreover, space is so less that you don’t have a proper place to maneuver, no matter how experienced you are. Some of the examples of confined spaces are drains, sewers, water tanks, silos, etc. 

What are the risks involved in confinement?

Working in an enclosed space is not easy, especially when there is no ventilation system or proper space to move around. This is why to make you more aware, we have discussed some of the hazards of working in such places. 

1. Oxygen deficiency: 

The first and foremost problem the workers face in a confined space is oxygen deficiency. Since no ventilation is present, it can become quite difficult for every worker to breathe properly. With carbon dioxide being released within the enclosure, the workers will have breathing problems due to the lack of oxygen if they work in that place for a prolonged time. 

2. Presence of gases and fumes: 

Sewers, drains and other confined spaces are usually at high risks from gases and fumes. These are mainly sulphur and nitrogenous fumes, which are deadly for our respiratory systems. Sometimes, compounds like sulphates, cyanides, carbon, and other harmful substances are also present, which will most certainly put your health at great risk. 

3. Enclosed space flooding: 

If you are working in a confined space with water, high chances of flooding will be there. Since there will be no drainage for the water, it will accumulate in the confined space, making it difficult for you to work properly. 

4. Dust and debris: 

The next type of hazard that should be taught in any confined space training is the presence of dust and debris. Dust floating in the air will cause breathing problems, further preventing you from working in safe and secured conditions. 

5. Explosions: 

If you are working with fuel systems or gasoline, high chances will be there of explosions and fire, especially if the place is confined. This is one of the hazardous situations you can work in.
